It is done to give the locals a product they are familiar with, and to adjust the menu to local tastes. Most American companies, in one way or another adjust their product line to the local tastes when they expand overseas. It' not just food companies. Even tire companies do it. Just because it's an American company, that does not imply in any way that the product is necessarily American. It once implied, but no longer does, that the money generated would find it's way back to the US in some way..

There is beauty in everything, you just have to appreciate the simple things. I have driven many thousands of miles in the states above. While they don't have the stunning beauty of the Tetons, they have a tranquility, and even serenity in their endless fields. Old barns, quiet isolated towns and wildlife everywhere.

Why do they need to be battery operated? Send low voltage power down the coax/twister pair cable. It's how our current phones work.I'm sure they can get bare bones VoIP to work on 5V and a couple of mA, even if it requires having a "low power" mode where all that works is basic phone service (all non-essential integrated "features" get turned off)
