An electric fence for deer will often be hardly more effective than a regular fence of the same height. Unless the electric fence is very tall the deer will very often jump it without ever touching the wires.
Baited electric fences are much more effective for deer than other electric fences because instead of simply jumping over, a deer will be inclined to touch an electric fence if it is baited.
Bait for electric fence An electric fence can be baited with a little peanut butter placed under aluminum foil “tents” placed over the wire. Or a slurry can be made with peanut butter which is applied to the wires using a paint roller. After touching the baited fence and receiving a shock, deer will avoid the entire area. The attractant used in the Wireless Deer Fence deer repellent system consists of attractant perfumes (food scents) incorporated into polyethylene resin shaped like a small tube. These tubes can be attached to an electric fence wire with a small piece of bare wire to attract deer to touch the wire.
Dogs inside a fence Dogs can be kept inside a fenced enclosure or a buried invisible fence can be very effective at keeping deer out, provided the dog is of the right disposition and of sufficient size. Deer, especially mule deer, will not uncommonly challenge dogs, at potentially great risk to the dog. Keeping two dogs together will be more effective, a deer is far less likely to challenge two dogs. If a dog is kept on a tether some deer will learn to keep out of reach and ignore the barking and the dog is at greater risk of injury if attacked.
